When a product is in decline, marketers may be able to give it new life by selling it in a foreign country. Expanding the market into a less developed country is often tempting, as many of these nations have less stringent regulations regarding labor, product quality, truth-in-advertising, etc. By selling the product in one of these countries, companies may be able to boost sales revenue while reducing certain costs. For example, a food or beverage distributor may be able to save money by selling a product in an overseas market because it can pay warehouse workers and delivery drivers very little in comparison to what it might pay these same positions in the U.S. At the same time, the company is able to extend the life cycle of a product that is in decline back home. It isn’t illegal, but is it ethical? What do you think?
