B.   There are several key elements in a strategic marketing plan.
1.    Define the mission statement.
2.    Set marketing plan objectives.
3.    Conduct a situation analysis.
4.    Identify competitive advantages.
5.    Identify strategic directions.
6.    Identify target markets and the marketing mix.

As a discussion starter, pick a product that is popular in school.  For example, an Ipod, a current CD, or a cell phone. 

As a class, have students brainstorm ways a company might market the product.

Next, pick a product that is consumed by most on a daily basis.  For example, toothpaste, bread, or gas for a car.  Again, have students brainstorm ways a company might market the product.

Help the students compare the differences between each product and the philosophies used to market each effectively.
