2/29/2012 Wednesday...sounds like fun

Quotables:

SEMII
“Colleges and universities have tried to defend their decisions to cut men’s athletic programs by claiming that Title IX requires gender equity. Actually, neither the Title IX statute nor its regulations require such a thing. But the OCR has issued an interpretation of compliance stating that a school may demonstrate compliance with Title IX if the school can show that the gender breakdown in the athletic department mirrors the gender breakdown of full-time undergraduate students. This provision— the proportionality test—is known as prong one of the three-prong test. The other two prongs—showing a history of expansion of women’s sports or showing that all student interest has been accommodated—have no measureable ways to demonstrate compliance, and thus are simply holding patterns until prong one is met. Proportionality is the only quantitative measure in the three-prong test, and thus the only assurance to schools that they are safe from Title IX-related lawsuits.”
Allison Kasic, Kimberly Schuld
Independent Women’s Forum
September 2008
“Unfortunately, as long as government is involved, college sports will continue to revolve around political, rather than athletic, contests, and only the most politically skilled will win. Until now, that's been supporters of Title IX, who have succeeded in persuading policymakers to require that colleges accommodate a demand for women's athletics opportunities that can't even be shown to exist. It's a game Title IX supporters have liked because the referee -- the government -- has usually been on their side.

But real fairness requires a neutral referee, which political solutions simply can’t provide. Take the government out of the game, however, and colleges and students -- not politicians -- will decide the winner. In other words, abolish Title IX, and let supply and demand take over the referee job.

In such a system women will almost always control the ball. They can choose the schools that offer what they want -- athletic opportunities, artistic outlets, good academics, or anything else -- and can run past those that don't.”

Super Bowl Assignment

Product (Product Service Management) often involves hours and sometimes days of brainsorming concerning what will your product be.  Once this is taken care of, usually a model/concept is drawn/created and then the fun starts with trying to find others/a company to buy the idea from you or at the very least (as in Shark Tank) fund your idea.

When these are not viable options, the internet has heard our cries for financing blessing and smiled down to us.  In this case, we are going to explore the world of Kickstarter.  Some of the ideas are crap, but others actually pull at my wallet strings and make me wish I could help fund their adventures.

SEM

Pushing on, let us put Motivational factors to rest and move to Product Positioning and image/branding.

Let us start by covering "What is your image/brand?"

What is it you say? Let us learn here.

So knowing a bit more of the terms, is a brand what you say? or is a brand what they say?

Tha positioning aspect is the "making room" in the hearts and monds of the people. As I once read, positioning is the foundation of the brand, but it isn't the brand itself. Positioning allows for the individual, group, village, culture to fill in the vacancy/vacuum with what they know or are told. It allows the company to "start anew" to reach the preference and action levels of motivation.

A short story in Price Anchoring...Culture anchoring. Cultural bias - what is it?
A preface of what we buy and why.

Are we ethical? We have been through the writings of ourselves, talked incessantly about our decisions and where we think we are as a human being and of our place in this world. Today I wish to change even that fabric of reality. The only thing I ask is that you are open to this new idea.

We will begin our day with a little video. Though linked here, allow me to illustrate it on the big screen. - Dan Ariely - Our Buggy Moral Code {16 min}

Take away?

Once more we visit with Dan Ariely in his discussion of our Consumer Buying Decisions. Do we really make up our own minds? or do we allow other to essentially make our minds up for us, especially with harder decisions? This sense of "preference" is something that for common place things/known things we have. But what if we move you past the mundane and take you to a decision you have never made? What will you choose? This small tidbit should show us.

And taking this further, allow us then to talk about self deception...truly the hallmark of our own psyche. All of this through the power of performance and a bit of magic.

Week Update - Thursday

  1. To answer the title, soon. I will return on Friday.

  2. Today you get a movie as promised, but as stated below, it is my choice of a movie.

  3. Welcome to Food, Inc, a delightful movie outlining the processing of our entire food system.

  4. SEM, pay careful attention to the elements of an event. Expand your understanding that virtually anything can be considered an event.

  5. HSM, think back to chapter pasts where we discussed Environmental Scanning. In that chaptwer, we discussed there are governmental forces out there dictating what and how we can alter the marekting mix or what affects the implimentation of our marketing mix on the environment/market at hand. This movie should show forth some real truths of how we are all manipulated into thinking certain ideals about some of the most basic commodities....food.

  6. Enjoy!

Week Update - Wednesday Personal Finance Continued

  1. you should have worked through the Personal Finance (Virtual Business) at the very least Lesson #1. If you did not get to finish, there may be time after the video to do it then. Please do not be ignorant and a bit stupid as to do it through the video.

  2. Today you will be watching The Secret Life of the Credit Card. What is more liberating than to immediately gratify yourself by using "plastic" to get what you want. This, in no small part, was a deciding factor to the overall housing crisis we experienced and still are experiencing. More to come off of that.

  3. Concerning the video - The Secret Life of the Credit Card
    Your student ID # (lunch number) will guide you to the appropriate question.
    Find the 5th number of your Student #. If 1-5, you have your question #.
    If 6-9, subtract 5 and there is your number

  4. Video itself - don't worry, it will be shown up on the board. The link is provided if you feel gumption to look at it later at home.

  5. Questions as you go - click hereBe prepared to give account as to the answer of assigned question.

  6. Explore this companion site. Read over the answers to better understand what the credit cards have done

  7. Cultural Divide - How other countries handle their consumer debt.

  8. If there is time after you watch the video, do the "Questions as you go", explore the companion site, and read the Cultural Divide - then you may go finish your lesson #1/ Lesson #2. If you have to stop before finished, you can save the game at that time. There is the Lesson #1 (or 2,3,4 etc) online when you open up the lesson itself. You read through the tutorial, you can find it. remember that this still counts as a grade for the time I cannot be with you.

At church on sunday to attend
Will serve to keep the world thy friend;
Honour thy parents; that is, all
From whom advancement may befall;
Thou shalt not kill; but need'st not strive
Officiously to keep alive:
Do not adultery commit;
Advantage rarely comes of it;
Thou shalt not steal; an empty feat,
When it's so lucrative to cheat;
Bear not false witness; let the lie
Have time to on its own wings to fly:
Thou shalt not covet, but tradition
Approves all forms all forms of competition.

We have begun the journey of our own selves by discussing the finer points or Morals, ethics and standards. We have also seen thhe emergence of ethics in the workplace (code of ethics)simple because people, if left to their own devices, cannot be trusted implicitly.

We now journey past the initial value systems we have and into the heart of the matter of what it is that ultimately guides (decides) our buying behavior.

We understand that the 4 P's of marketing is the only thing that we as Marketers can ever change to get the Target Market to want...desire...act upon in the form of "buying" (ideas or products).

Now we get to explore more in depth as to the buying decisions that ultimately lead us to perceive the image we have of ourselves and of others.

9/7 In my absence.....

Ponderisms:

“Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising.” – Mark Twain

“Every word, sentence, and headline should have one specific purpose – to lead your potential customer to your order page.” – Shelley Lowery

All -

Clearly I am not here today.

In my absence, don't be stupid.
Though stupidity should be punished, while I cannot be with you, so shall your good behavior be rewarded.

Please,
  • No clicky today. The videos presented will be more than ample to keep your attention.
  • Be mindful of your friends, even though I am away, let us not fall victim to idle chat and mindless discourse with your friends
  • Understand that should your name be recorded by Mrs. Shields, you will receive a failing grade for today. But, should you do well and no name recorded in Mrs Shields notes, you will all receive a bonus test grade - simply put, I wonderful opportunity.
I know you will do great, because you are adults, ethical adults, not children.

Ponderisms:
“The fact is, everyone is in sales. Whatever area you work in, you do have clients and you do need to sell.” – Jay Abraham
“Loving your customer boils down to one thing – creating an almost fanatic sense of loyalty in your customer such that they wouldn’t think of buying from anyone else.” – Brad Antin / CommonSenseMarketing.com

SEMII:
Please read the ponderisms. Do eithere of the ones posted speak to you? If so, how?

We begin the journey down the ethical trail, but more importantly, how it all relates back to sports and entertainment.

Open up either 2.01.doc or 2.01 ppt and let's begin.

Thinking critically, research for a bit the ethical quandary that the following people found themselves in. Clearly, just from a cursory knowledge, one will know that their fortunes were adversely affected since they opted for the unethical route.

Martha Stewart, Pete Rose, Sammy Sosa, DarrylStrawberry, Michael Jackson

One of my mottos is this: Stupidity should be punished. What was their punishment? Was it just?

Let think of a couple of more and explore their situations.
