H STRATEGIC MARKETING
2.03  Understand market segmentation, targeting, and positioning and the impact on buying behavior

Suggest a product such as a Coca-Cola, a McDonald’s hamburger, etc.

In groups of 2-3, have students find advertisements (from magazines, on TV, on the Internet) that demonstrate the positioning strategies used by the company marketing the product.

Next, facilitate a class discussion by having the groups compare how these companies attempt to gain sales by choosing an appropriate positioning strategy.

Divide the class into teams of 2-3.

Assign each team a company (or allow them to choose) and a product that the company markets.

On a sheet of notebook paper or on a computer, have students complete the following about the company and or product:

  • For what segment of the market is the product intended?
  • What is the target marketing strategy utilized by the company?
  • What is the positioning strategy utilized by the company?
  • Give examples of how segmentation might be done via the Internet.
  • What variables would the company have to deal with?
  • How could this product be positioned differently?
