Friday marked a notable death in the family of frivolous bad-for-you snack cakes.  Hostess, the home of Twinkie the Kid, Captain Cupcake. Wonder Bread, and 269 other trademarks announced the closing of their plants and selling off of all assets (including intellectual property).

The goal of a marketing interaction isn't to close the sale, any more than the goal of a first date is to get married. No, the opportunity is to move forward, to earn attention and trust and curiosity and conversation.
